I have been blessed this year with opportunities to hear some fantastic speakers and have insightful conversations.  I know these experiences were great because I can remember the presentation and I took lots of notes.  To this I say- “Big deal!”  While all of this is positive, not reviewing my notes or using what I have used is a failure. So, as part of my personal knowledge management process, here are my top 14 learning gems from 2017.

2017 Learning Gems

  1. Don’t forget where you came from, but don’t you dare let it define you. (Kat Cole, CEO Cinnabon)
  2. Replace “How?” with “Wow!” when someone comes to you with an idea. (Andy Stanley, Pastor of Northpoint Community Church)
  3. 90% of leaders say accountability is important. Only 25% have plans for accountability. (Eric Kulikowski, Leadership Coach and Speaker)
  4. The way to grow your power is to give it away. (Carla Harris, Managing Director at Morgan Stanley)
  5. On time and self-management: Priority limits us. [It only puts] one thing in front of another. Need to look at significance of the task versus urgency of task.  (Mark Brown, Inspirational Speaker)
  6. We equate that being uncomfortable [in a situation] is bad. We need to create in our belief system that it is okay to be uncomfortable. (Gracey Lichetenstein, Coaching and Training Resource)
  7. Most of us are in time poverty. What have you been saying “yes” to or procrastinating?  Spend 30 minutes a day on something that is not due for at least 30 days. (Andy Kaufman, Project Management and Leadership Consultant)
  8. Armed with enough humility, we can learn from anyone. (Bill Hybels, Founding and Senior Pastor, Willow Creek Community Church)
  9. After a hardship, people are afraid to say the wrong thing so they say nothing. (Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook)
  10. Information is a commodity. Your differentiator is taking risk. (Carla Harris, Managing Director at Morgan Stanley)
  11. Whitespace is a strategic pause taken between activities to re-boot or be constructive. (Juilet Funt,CEO of Whitespace at Work)
  12. Even people who have great jobs have terrible days. (Lazlo Bock, Co-founder of Humu)
  13. Leaders are often led by their fears instead of being driven by dreams. (Gary Haugen, Founder and CEO of International Justice Mission)
  14. How do you keep amazing experiences alive? (Kristin Crockett, Deserve Level Coach)

This knowledge list continues to allow me to grow my personal and professional skills and simply, become a better person.  And this year more than ever, our world needs more people who want to move themselves forward.
